When I began taking care of my grandchildren in 1989 it was not something I had planned to do. I was living a "normal" life, with friends and family and things to do. Places to go and people to see. But raising seven (or even one for that matter) grandchildren does not leave much time for a social life. My life became filled with caring for three babies, all about the same age, and four other young children. I was completely overwhelmed! Often depressed. Getting out of bed, although a necessity, became something I did not want to do. Why not cover my head, and stay in bed and feel sorry for myself?
I did not realize, at that time, that 6% of all children were being raised by grandparents and other relatives. The number in 2010 rose even higher to more than 10% of children being raised by others. That translates to 5.8 million children being raised by others!
I had plenty of company!
Getting any kind of assistance for a relative's child can be all consuming. Forms must be filled out and documentation is necessary for even the smallest help. The questions sometimes seem invasive.
We find the caregiver is so overwhelmed with caring for their child/children they don't stop to take care of themselves. Some will die from stress related disorders, such as heart attacks and strokes. Some may simply give up.
This does not have to be a loosing battle. We can have a good life and still do God's work.
Kinship-caregivers have to work together and support one another. We need not be alone. We can share information, resources and love. This is what Grandma K.A.R.E.S., Inc is all about. It's about informing, supporting and empowering the caregiver. It is about sharing what we have and what we know. It's about bringing caregivers together to fight this fight with knowledge and tools. It's about being there for one another, for our children, while still taking care of ourselves.
